Susan Statham is a visual artist, writer and teacher. A graduate of the Ottawa School of Art, Algonquin College, The National Portrait Academy and the University of Waterloo, she attended part-time studies at The Ontario College of Art, and workshops at the Cecil-Graves Studio in Italy and the Art Students League in New York, New York. She is a graduate of Advanced Fiction Writing at the University of Waterloo and creative writing courses at Loyalist College. Her quest for instruction in classical and traditional methods is chronicled in her first mystery novel, The Painter’s Craft. Until 2000, Susan lived in Toronto where she worked at a Toronto Public School and a private art school she and her partner established in the Dundas West area. After relocating to Northumberland County, she continued to receive portrait commissions and after exhibiting at a local gallery received requests to teach. Starting with a small group of students in her studio, she now teaches 4 classes a week. Susan has had solo shows and participated in group shows in Toronto, Markham, Uxbridge, Cobourg, Belleville, Grafton and Prince Edward County. Her work is in collections in Canada, the United States and New Zealand. Although she has experience in most mediums, her favorite is oils and her preferred subject matter is portraiture. Her commissions have included portraits of our first woman Lieutenant-Governor, the Hon. Pauline McGibbon and her husband, Donald McGibbon and more recently Cobourg’s Mayor, Peter Delanty and his wife, Suzanne. Susan is a member of the Society of Portrait Artists, the Northumberland Arts Council, the Brighton Arts Council and the Spirit of the Hills. She is Past President of the Cobourg Art Club.
